Child Safety
What to Look Out For
When looking for window coverings, many people don’t think about the safety hazards of window coverings for children. It’s understandable. What would a curtain or shade held up way on the top of a window do to a child? However, when cords are within reach, they might look harmless—but they can actually be a serious strangulation hazard. This is especially true for older blinds or shades that don’t meet today’s safety standards.
Every parent should be aware of child safety at home. We make sure to offer products that keep the needs of parents or future parents in mind. All of our products come corded as standard but there are cordless pull or motorized options available depending on your needs and budget.
If you can, go with cordless window coverings in homes with babies or young kids. But if you have corded window coverings and can’t replace them with safer products click here to see how you can retrofit your coverings to be safe for children.
Ideally, it is best to replace corded blinds, shades, and draperies with cordless window coverings in homes with infants and young children. However, if that option is not available, follow these steps to childproof your window coverings.
• Make sure that cords are as short as possible and out of reach
• Move all cribs, beds, furniture and toys away from windows and cords
• Keep continuous-loop cords anchored to a floor or wall.
• Ensure that cord stops are installed to limit the movement of inner lift cords.
Motorization
What if you could open and close your window shades from the comfort of your bed or couch with a single touch of a button? No worries about the cords tangling or struggling to reach a shade for a window a bit higher up. If this sounds appealing to you, consider our motorized shade selection!
Motorized blinds and shades can be controlled from a remote or you can connect them to your phone with the Somfy myLink RTS hub. You can then connect your shades to popular smart home apps like Amazon Alexa, Google Home, or Apple HomeKit. You can open or close them one at a time or all at once with just a touch of a button. You can even set up a schedule for them to raise or lower them at whatever time you want each day.
Why should you motorize your window coverings?
Motorized products can be dealbreaker if a household member has mobility issues, if your home has windows that cannot be reached, or if you have small children. Smart blinds and shades don’t come with stray dangling cords, so they are much safer for kids.
Motorization is available on all of our products except for shutters. Whether you want normal blinds or the new, fancy zebra shade, you can add the motorization option to make your home safer and “smarter.”
The biggest downside for motorized products is the heavy price tag. Motors are a lot pricier than most people think, or at least the good ones are. If you want a nice, smart, motorized solution to make your bedroom windows pop you’d want it to last. We use Somfy motors, one of the most reliable window covering motorization manufacturers in the world. On top of their great track record of customer satisfaction, these motors come with a 5 year warranty. So if there are any possible defects or problems, you can give us a call and we’ll be able to replace the motors free of charge! The cost of smart blinds and shades can be absolutely worth it if the convenience or design aspects are important to your purchase.
